Patients
Insurance, billing and what things cost.
Medical billing is confusing enough without a practice adding to it. Here is how ours works, in plain language, before you arrive.
Insurance
Plans and verification
We participate with many commercial insurance plans and with Medicare. Because networks change and plans differ even within the same insurer, the most reliable way to confirm coverage is to call us at 605-600-8380 with your plan information, or to check with your insurer directly.
Please bring your insurance card to every visit, and tell us promptly if your coverage changes. If your plan requires a referral or prior authorization, we will help — but the requirement is set by your plan, not by us.
Medicaid
We are not able to see Medicaid patients
Our practice does not accept Medicaid, and federal rules do not permit a Medicaid beneficiary to be seen as a cash-pay patient instead. That means we are unfortunately not able to provide care to patients with Medicaid coverage in any form.
We know that is disappointing to hear, and we would rather tell you clearly here than after you have taken time off work to come in. Monument Health and other regional providers accept Medicaid, and we are glad to point you toward them.
Cash pay
Simple, published rates
If you are uninsured, have a high deductible, or would simply prefer not to involve insurance, we offer straightforward self-pay pricing:
- $250 — initial visit
- $150 — follow-up visit
Procedures, pathology and medications are additional and are quoted before they are performed whenever possible. Pathology is processed by an outside laboratory, which bills separately for its work.
Screenings
Why skin checks aren’t billed as preventive care
Medicare and commercial insurers do not classify dermatologic skin examinations as preventive services. A full-body skin cancer screening is therefore billed as a specialist evaluation and management visit, and your copay, coinsurance and deductible apply.
This is standard across dermatology and is a function of how the billing codes are defined, not a choice our practice makes. If any spot is biopsied or treated during the visit, those procedures are billed in addition to the visit.
Hair loss
Hair loss visits are cash pay
Insurance does not cover treatment of androgenetic alopecia or telogen effluvium, the two most common causes of hair loss. Hair loss visits are therefore cash pay at $250 for an initial visit and $150 for follow-ups. Certain diagnostic procedures, such as a scalp biopsy, may be billable to insurance.
Cosmetic
Cosmetic services and payment
Cosmetic treatments are not covered by insurance. Payment is due at the time of booking, and a cosmetic consultation is $150. Current pricing is published on our cosmetic pricing page and is subject to change.
Appointments
No-show and cancellation fees
- Beginning with the third missed appointment, a $75 fee applies.
- A missed surgical appointment carries a $250 fee.
- Please give as much notice as you can so the time can be offered to someone else.
Membership
Concierge membership
We offer an optional concierge membership for patients who want a closer, more accessible relationship with the practice. Read about membership.
Questions
Ask before, not after
If you are unsure what a visit or procedure will cost, call us before you come. Our administrative team can explain what we know, and what depends on your specific plan benefits. Estimates are estimates — your insurer determines final coverage — but you should never be surprised by something we could have told you in advance.
This page is general education and is not medical advice, diagnosis or treatment, and it does not create a physician–patient relationship. Individual circumstances differ; please discuss your own skin with a qualified clinician. If you are having a medical emergency, call 911.
